A Honduran man has been sentenced to 63 months in federal prison for drug-related offenses. United States Attorney Ronald C. Gathe, Jr. announced that U.S. District Judge Brian A. Jackson handed down the sentence to Marvin Martinez-Ruiz, 42, following his conviction for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and cocaine. In addition to his prison term, Martinez-Ruiz will serve three years of supervised release.
Martinez-Ruiz's guilty plea included admissions regarding an incident on August 21, 2023. On that date, deputies from the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office conducted a traffic stop on a white van due to improper lane use. Martinez-Ruiz was identified as the driver. After receiving consent to search the vehicle, deputies discovered 416.1 grams of methamphetamine, 150.9 grams of cocaine, and two digital scales inside the van. Following advisement of his Miranda rights, Martinez-Ruiz admitted ownership of the narcotics.
The investigation was carried out by multiple agencies including the Drug Enforcement Administration, East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office, Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office, and Baton Rouge Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jeremy S. Johnson.
