Congressman Garret Graves of South Louisiana has announced the allocation of an additional $476 million to complete the Comite Flood Control Project. The project, which was only partially finished, required further funds beyond the $471 million previously secured by Graves.
Graves expressed concern over the rising costs, stating, “We’ve seen the cost of this project more than triple since we first ‘fully funded’ it in 2018.” He emphasized accountability for these increases and highlighted the importance of not allowing delays as experienced before. "My top priority is to get this project finished as quickly as possible," he added.
In discussions earlier today, Graves obtained a commitment from the Deputy Chief of Engineers at the Corps that the project's completion would remain on schedule for 2025.
The Comite Flood Control Project aims to reduce flood risk in the Amite Basin, specifically affecting East Baton Rouge, Livingston, and Ascension parishes. The region suffered significant damage during the 2016 flood, with 109,000 homes affected and over $3.8 billion in property damage across Louisiana.
