U.S. Attorney Ronald C. Gathe, Jr. announced that the Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance has awarded $500,000 to the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office for a new digital High Definition (HD) Forward Looking InfraRed (FLIR)/camera system for the Air Support Unit's helicopter. The project aims to enhance aerial surveillance, search and rescue operations, criminal investigations and apprehensions, and other activities requiring this tool.

The service area for this project includes the City of Baton Rouge/Parish of East Baton Rouge and the surrounding eight parishes in the Baton Rouge Metropolitan area. The new system is expected to improve safety for personnel by allowing officers to more easily identify potential dangers and take appropriate action.
