Baton Rouge, LA (August 10, 2022) – The Baton Rouge Area Chamber (BRAC) today announced the College Drive Community Clean-up event on August 20 as a pilot corridor improvement program. The program focuses on empowering businesses in commercial corridors to establish regular clean-up initiatives to address litter in their areas.
“College Drive is one of the most highly visible, highly travelled, and highly littered corridors in our region,” said Klein Kirby, BRAC Quality of Place Council chairman and A. Wilbert’s Sons CEO. “Engaging businesses in a corridor to rally pride in their space is just the first step. To tackle a quality of place issue as big as litter, it takes the commitment and coordinated effort of the community and leaders to create transformative change.”
In partnership with Clean Pelican, BRAC’s Quality of Place Council will use this clean-up event, which is open to the community, to build a standard operating procedure for other corridors to use and implement in their areas around the metropolitan region.
“Clean Pelican envisions a clean and beautiful Baton Rouge free of litter, making our city a welcoming place for businesses and families to stay, work, and play,” said Johanna Landreneau, founder and interim executive director of Clean Pelican. “Our business sponsored litter clean ups and educational outreach provides a platform to shift our city from a litter culture to a clean culture.”
College Drive businesses who have committed to the clean-up initiative, include:
· Alpha Media
· Beau Box Real Estate
· Coffee Call
· Crowne Plaza Executive Center of Baton Rouge
· Holiday Inn of Baton Rouge
· Junk King Baton Rouge
· LUBA Workers’ Comp
· The Penthouse Club
· Signal 88 Security
· WRKF
“When we think of Baton Rouge, two things come to mind – our culture and our environment,” said East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome. “Litter affects our roadways, quality of life, and poses a threat to what makes our city great, which is why it is important for everyone to work together to address this issue. I am excited to see the community and businesses work together to keep Baton Rouge beautiful.”
Businesses and volunteers will gather in the large parking lot on College Drive, located next to Coffee Call, on Saturday, August 20, 2022, from 9 – 11 a.m. Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome will speak with business leaders, followed by disbursement of clean up supplies and review of safety protocols from anti-litter organization, Clean Pelican. Water will be provided by Albertson’s on College Drive. All businesses along the College Drive corridor and members of the community are encouraged to join. Registration for the event can be found at brac.org/events.
Companies or individuals interested in the pilot program, participating in the event or on BRAC’s Quality of Place Council can contact Caila Miceli, BRAC’s staff lead for quality of place initiatives, at caila@brac.org for more information.
