Cost of college went up for resident students at Southern University and A & M College

In-state tuition and fees rose 5.3 percent for 2018-19 at Southern University and A & M College, according to recent data from the U.S. Department of Education.

Louisiana residents paid $9,122 to attend the four-year public institution this year – $456 more than the $8,666 charged for 2017-18.

Non-residents paid 80.6 percent more than residents this year, or $16,472. Their price tag was reduced 8.9 percent from $18,080 in 2017-18.

About 78 percent of the school's undergraduate population are Louisiana residents. And about 22 percent are residents of other states.

Data shows 98 percent of full-time undergraduates who started school in 2015-16 received student financial aid in some form. In all, 1,102 students received grants or scholarships totaling $8.2 million and 1,043 students took out student loans totaling more than $6.5 million.

Including all undergraduates (6,693), 4,419 students used grants or scholarships totaling $30 million, and 4,289 students took out $30.7 million in federal student loans.
