This week in Baton Rouge Metro history.

James Charles Taylor born in Baton Rouge on Sept. 20, 1935

James Charles Taylor was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on September 20, 1935. He attended Baton Rouge High School and later played college football at LSU. At LSU, he led the Southeastern Conference in scoring in 1956 and 1957. He earned first-team All-America and All-SEC honors. Taylor was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in 1958. He played fullback in the NFL for ten seasons, mostly with the Packers. He won four NFL championships and one Super Bowl. He was named NFL MVP in 1962. Taylor became the first player to rush for 1,000 yards in five straight seasons. He held multiple franchise records with the Packers. He also played one season with the New Orleans Saints. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1976. After football, Taylor worked in business and media. He stayed active in Baton Rouge sports and community events. He died there on October 13, 2018.
