Southern women’s basketball remains unbeaten at home after win over Mississippi Valley State

Southern University’s women’s basketball team defeated Mississippi Valley State 69-46 at the F.G. Clark Activity Center on Thursday, maintaining their undefeated home record and improving to 5-1 in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play.

The Jaguars led for nearly the entire game, building a lead that reached as high as 32 points in the fourth quarter. Southern’s defense played a major role, holding Mississippi Valley State scoreless from the field for long stretches and forcing 24 turnovers, which were converted into 29 points.

Jaylia Reed was Southern’s top scorer with 13 points, also contributing five rebounds and three assists. Jocelyn Tate added nine points and six rebounds, while D’Shantae Edwards recorded seven points along with a team-high five steals. The Jaguars’ bench provided significant support by scoring 38 points compared to Mississippi Valley State’s 22.

Southern outscored its opponent in the paint by a margin of 34-14 and held a rebounding advantage of 44-33. The team finished with an overall shooting percentage of 36.6% and tallied 18 steals during the contest.

Describing how the game unfolded, Southern opened with a strong start, going on a 12-3 run and ending the first quarter ahead 23-6. Despite slowing down offensively in the second quarter, their defense limited Mississippi Valley State to just one made field goal out of sixteen attempts for that period. By halftime, Southern led by eleven.

The third quarter proved decisive as Southern scored 25 points while allowing only eight from Mississippi Valley State. A key moment came during a mid-quarter run where they scored twelve unanswered points to extend their lead past twenty.

Statistical leaders for Southern included Jaylia Reed (13 points), Jocelyn Tate (nine points), D’Shantae Edwards (seven points), Olivia Delancy (seven points), and Demya Porter (four points). Edwards also contributed five steals; Porter added two blocks.

Southern will continue SWAC play at home against University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday afternoon at F.G. Clark Activity Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m., with live streaming available on SWAC TV via www.gojagsports.com.
