Southern University’s women’s basketball team concluded its season on March 23 with a loss to South Carolina in the opening round of the 2026 NCAA Tournament at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, South Carolina. Despite the defeat, Southern’s players and coaches reflected on what they described as a significant era for the program.

The Jaguars struggled offensively during the game, shooting just 18.5% from the field. However, individual efforts stood out throughout the contest: Jaylia Reed made a three-point shot, Olivia Delancy added another triple in the second quarter, Xyllize Harrison scored on a second-chance opportunity inside, while Jestiny Dixon and Jocelyn Tate worked to create offensive momentum.

This game marked not only an end to Southern’s tournament run but also served as a farewell for several key seniors who contributed to multiple championships and postseason appearances. Harrison was recognized as “a cornerstone of the program,” having achieved three Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) titles and three NCAA Tournament appearances. D’Shantae Edwards earned two SWAC championships and helped define Southern’s defensive identity during her tenure.

Other departing seniors included Kiana Wilson, who contributed quietly but consistently; Jaylia Reed, whose confidence was noted throughout her time with Southern; Olivia Delancy, remembered for her shooting ability; and Demonnie Lagway, who provided energy and composure beyond statistical measures.

The senior class is credited by team officials with raising expectations within the program through their multiple conference titles and back-to-back First Four victories in recent years. The team emphasized that while this year’s tournament run ended early, it established a foundation for future success at Southern University.
