The Southern University track and field team posted a series of strong performances at the South Alabama Jaguar Invitational on May 1. Sophomore Marcus Delcy led the Jaguars by winning the men’s 800 meters with a time of 1:53.53, marking the team’s only victory at the meet.
The event saw several notable finishes from both men’s and women’s teams. Junior Kaden Lewis placed fourth in the men’s 100 meters, finishing in 10.55 seconds, while Rondisa Williams secured second place in the women’s 100 meters with a time of 11.73 seconds.
Freshman Keeton Johnson contributed to Southern’s success by finishing third in the men’s 1500 meters with a season-best time of 4:06.72 and placing seventh in the men’s 400 meters at 49.71 seconds. In hurdles events, freshman Larry Paul III set a personal best of 56.16 seconds to finish sixth in the men’s 400-meter hurdles, while sophomore Aniyah Glover finished fourth in the women’s event with a time of 1:09.19.
The throwing events also yielded strong results for Southern University athletes. Junior Ariyonna Edmond finished second in the women’s hammer throw with a mark of 51.31 meters and seventh in shot put; freshman Ayanna Hunt was fifth in discus (44.75m), and Layla Spann-McDonald achieved top-eight finishes in both discus and hammer throw events.
On the men’s side, Michael Fulton placed third in shot put (14.75m) and seventh in discus, while Haywood Gallien finished eighth overall in hammer throw among other top-eight placements.
In jumping events, Kendall Cook took fourth place in women’s 200 meters (26.33) as well as fifth place for long jump (5.38m). Mashayla Lazard cleared a height of 1.58 meters to secure sixth position for high jump.
Looking ahead, Southern University will host the Southwestern Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships at A.W. Mumford Stadium from May 10 to May 12.
