Coby Robinson, a sophomore computer science major at Southern University and A&M College, has advanced to the Eastern College Athletic Conference EA Sports College Football National Championship, according to an April 17 announcement. This marks the first time a historically Black college or university will compete for a Division II championship in collegiate esports.
Robinson reached the finals after overcoming Indiana University East in a best-of-three series. He lost the opening game but came back to win the final two games, securing his place in the championship match.
Christopher Turner, director and head coach of the Southern University Esports Digital Gaming Ecosystem, said, “This is a monumental moment not just for Southern University, but for the entire HBCU landscape. Watching Coby battle back after being down a game and win on an overtime field goal shows the grit and composure our students possess. This is HBCU history in the making.”
The national championship match between No. 2 seed Southern University and No. 1 seed Bellarmine University is scheduled for Wednesday, April 22 at 7 p.m., with live streaming available on Twitch at twitch.tv/subr_esports.
A watch party will be held at the Esports Innovation Lab located in the Southern University Student Union. The university community is invited to attend.
