Southern University defeated Alcorn State 7–0 on March 27, with a strong pitching performance by Aaliyah Zabala at Lady Jaguar Field.
The game was scoreless until the fourth inning, when Southern broke through offensively. This win brings Southern’s record to 20-11 overall and 6-4 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, while Alcorn falls to 11-19 and remains winless in conference play.
Zabala pitched a complete game shutout, allowing only three hits with seven strikeouts and no walks. She retired ten of the last eleven batters she faced for her ninth victory of the season. The Jaguars’ offense was led by Abigail Mitchell, who went two-for-three with a home run, a triple, and three runs batted in. Laila Clark contributed two hits and two RBIs, while Asia George scored twice and hit a double.
After quiet early innings, Southern’s offense started in the fourth inning with singles from George and Clark. A wild pitch allowed the first run to score before Mitchell hit a two-run home run for a three-run lead. In the fifth inning, White singled to start another rally; George doubled; Clark drove in two more runs; Mitchell tripled for an RBI; and an error extended the lead to seven runs.
Alcorn State struggled offensively throughout the game, managing just three hits without advancing runners into scoring position more than once as Southern’s defense held firm.
The series is scheduled to conclude Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
