The Southern University bowling team will participate in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Championships at the International Training and Research Center in Arlington, Texas, starting March 20.
The event is significant for the Lady Jaguars as it brings together top teams from the conference, including Alabama State, Alabama A&M, Florida A&M, Jackson State, Southern, and Texas Southern. The tournament will use a Mega Match format that includes traditional games and Baker matches to determine winners over three days of competition.
Southern enters the championships after finishing sixth at the TNBA Open on March 1. During that tournament, the Lady Jaguars secured wins against Grambling and Oklahoma Christian on opening day and added victories over Alabama State, Grambling, and Central Missouri on day two. They concluded by defeating Alabama State again in bracket play.
The Lady Jaguars are set to open their SWAC Championship run against Alabama A&M. The Mega-Match format begins with a traditional team game followed by a five-game Baker match. If necessary, a best-of-seven Baker match will decide the winner if teams are tied after two sets.
Maria Molina Diaz leads Southern this season with a team-best average of 202. As a freshman during SWAC play, she totaled 4,219 pins over 23 games for an average of 183.43 and finished seventh overall. Molina Diaz has received multiple All-Tournament honors and was named tournament MVP at the Southern Queens after recording 1,051 pins for a 210.2 average.
Alanna Jones has also contributed consistently with an average of 187.8 and several top-25 finishes this season. Teammates Darian Mobley and Za’Viara Williams have posted averages of 169 and 168 respectively.
