The Southern University women’s bowling team began the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Round-Up on Friday at Pin Palace Lanes in Huntsville, Alabama, finishing the day with two wins out of five matches.
Southern started the event facing Alabama State and lost 954–806. Maria Molina Diaz led the Lady Jaguars with a score of 194, while Darian Mobley contributed 176 and Mikayla Stephens added 171. In their second match against Florida A&M, Southern narrowly lost again, 814–791. Mobley posted a team-high 181 and Molina Diaz followed with 178.
The Lady Jaguars found success in their third match, defeating Texas Southern 849–785. Angel Stein had the highest score for Southern in that game with a 189, followed by Molina Diaz’s 176 and Mobley’s 171. The team continued its momentum against Grambling, winning decisively 846–580. Molina Diaz scored a team-leading 188, Mobley recorded a 179, and both Stephens and Alanna Jones finished with scores of 171.
Southern ended Friday with a close loss to Alabama A&M, falling short by just over twenty pins at 854–831. Mobley achieved the team’s only game above 200 for the day with a score of 211; Molina Diaz was close behind at 199.
At the end of Friday’s competition, Molina Diaz ranked third overall among bowlers at the Round-Up with a total pinfall of 934 (an average of 187 per game), while Mobley was fifth overall with a total of 918 pins (183.6 average). For the season so far, Molina Diaz holds ninth place in conference rankings based on her average score per game over fourteen games played. Mobley is fourteenth in the conference after nineteen games.
On Saturday, Southern will compete against Jackson State, Prairie View, Alabama State, Florida A&M, and Texas Southern.
