Southern University defeated Xavier of Louisiana in a doubleheader at Lady Jaguar Field on March 24, winning the first game 2-1 and the second game 6-2.
The games were important for Southern as they demonstrated both timely hitting and solid relief pitching. The victories help build momentum as the team approaches the midpoint of their conference schedule.
In the opener, Southern scored early when Asia George reached base after being hit by a pitch, stole second, and was driven home by Prestaisha White. After Xavier tied it in the third inning, Abigail Mitchell singled and later scored on an RBI double from Izabell Astran to put Southern ahead. Relief pitcher Jordynn Jennings entered during a bases-loaded threat in the fourth inning and pitched three hitless innings to secure the win.
Game two saw George lead off with a solo home run. After Xavier tied it again in the third inning, Southern responded with four runs highlighted by Mitchell’s two-run homer. Ava Wallace contributed three hits and two RBIs while Jennings again closed out the game for her second save of the season. Chakirrious Parker earned the win as starting pitcher.
Southern totaled nine hits in game two while holding Xavier to five. The team will next face Alcorn at Lady Jaguar Field starting March 27, with games scheduled through Saturday.
