Southern Lady Jaguars softball team recorded two wins against Alcorn State in a doubleheader at Lady Jaguar Field on March 28. The victories, with scores of 9-4 and 10-7, marked the team’s seventh consecutive win and improved their record to 22-11 overall and 8-4 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.

The results are significant as they keep Southern tied for second place in the Western Division, positioning them well for the remainder of conference play.

In the first game, Abigail Mitchell hit a three-run home run in the opening inning to give Southern an early lead. Katiana Maldonado contributed with a double, two runs scored, and a stolen base from the bottom of the lineup. Prestaisha White drove in two runs during a three-run fourth inning that extended Southern’s advantage. Ariel Burton added a solo home run in the third inning. Pitcher Chakirrious Parker delivered a complete-game performance by allowing four runs on seven hits and earning her fourth win of the season.

During game two, Alcorn State initially led by three runs after hitting three home runs within three innings. Jaciee Massey responded with a two-run homer for Southern, while White added another solo shot to keep her team close. In the sixth inning, Massey started a rally that included an RBI single from Laila Clark and an RBI double from Mitchell before Burton hit another crucial home run to put Southern ahead. Aaliyah Zabala pitched 4.1 scoreless innings in relief to secure the victory.

Looking ahead, Southern will travel to Houston for an important series against Texas Southern as both teams remain tied for second place heading into the latter half of conference play.
