The Southern University women’s bowling team lost to Alabama A&M on March 20 in the opening round of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championships at the International Training and Research Center in Arlington, Texas. The match was decided in a best-of-three Mega Match format, with Southern ultimately falling 2-1.

This result is significant as it impacts Southern’s progression in the conference championships and highlights areas for improvement as they prepare for upcoming competitions.

Southern started strong by winning the traditional game with an 839-785 score. Mikayla Stevens led her team with a score of 177, followed by Alanna Jones with 174 and Maria Molina Diaz with 170. However, missed opportunities late in the game signaled potential challenges ahead.

Momentum shifted during the Baker total pinfall segment, where Alabama A&M won all five games. The Bulldogs established a lead after a high-scoring first game and maintained their advantage as Southern struggled to capitalize on mistakes by their opponents. Inconsistent play continued into the decisive best-of-seven Baker match. Although Southern won two games, frequent open frames allowed Alabama A&M to secure victory.

Looking ahead, Southern will have a break next weekend before competing at the TNBA Invitational hosted by Jackson State at All Star Lanes in Baton Rouge.
