Southern University’s women’s bowling team competed in the second day of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) West Roundup in Humble, Texas, on Saturday. The Lady Jaguars played 25 traditional games and accumulated a total of 4,299 pins, averaging 171.96 pins per game.
The team began the day with only one loss and aimed to defeat Jackson State, which was undefeated at that point in the tournament. Southern narrowly lost to Jackson State by a score of 922–919. Maria Molina Diaz led Southern with a score of 214. Mikayla Stephens scored 183, Angel Stein contributed 180, and Alanna Jones added 175.
Southern secured its only win of the day against Prairie View A&M with a close result of 856–851. In this match, Jones scored 195 while Molina Diaz recorded a score of 185 and Stephens posted a 175.
In their third match against Alabama State, four Southern bowlers scored over 170 but the team lost by a margin of 939–886. Darian Mobley led Southern with a score of 191. Molina Diaz added 189, Stein had 173, and Jones finished with a score of 170.
The Lady Jaguars were defeated in their last two matches: they lost to Florida A&M (905–865) and Texas Southern (863–773). Against Florida A&M, Jones led with a score of 185; Stephens followed closely with an effort of 181; Molina Diaz closed out her day scoring 175.
After ten matches in the tournament so far, Alanna Jones leads Southern in total pins at 1,740 for an average of 174 per game. Maria Molina Diaz has achieved the highest average on the team at 185.8 across five games (929 total pins). Angel Stein has accumulated a total pinfall of 1,392 over eight games for an average of 174 per game. Mikayla Stephens has totaled 1,717 pins (171.7 average), while Darian Mobley has contributed with scores totaling to an average of just over 170 through all ten matches.
The SWAC West Roundup is set to conclude on Sunday as Southern faces Grambling, Alabama A&M, Jackson State and Prairie View A&M in four more traditional games.
