Southern University defeated Grambling 10-0 in six innings on March 13 at Lady Jaguar Field, opening its Southwestern Athletic Conference series with a decisive win.
The game was highlighted by a complete-game shutout from Aaliyah Zabala, who allowed five hits, one walk, and struck out two batters over six innings. With this performance, Zabala improved her season record to 5-2. The Lady Jaguars’ offense also played a key role, collecting 11 hits and eight runs batted in.
Southern took an early lead in the second inning when Katiana Maldonado stole home and Darbie Richard hit an RBI single. The team extended its advantage with a four-run third inning that included an RBI double from Abigail Mitchell and additional run-scoring hits from Maldonado and Jaciee Massey. Laila Clark added to the lead with a solo home run in the fourth inning.
The game ended in the sixth inning after Mitchell hit a three-run homer, bringing the score to 10-0 and triggering the run-rule victory. Mitchell finished with four RBIs and two hits, while Clark went 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Maldonado contributed two hits and two runs, and Asia George had two hits along with two stolen bases.
Grambling managed seven runners left on base but could not score against Zabala’s pitching. Southern improved its overall record to 11-10 and moved to 1-3 in conference play; Grambling fell to 7-13 overall.
Southern is scheduled to continue its series against Grambling with a doubleheader on Saturday.
