Southern University’s Roman Smith and Keith Fowler received weekly honors from the Southwestern Athletic Conference on March 26 following their performances at the Louisiana Classic.
The recognition highlights achievements by both athletes in the high jump event, with Smith being named Co-Field Athlete of the Week and Fowler earning Newcomer of the Week. These awards showcase Southern University’s strength in track and field within the conference.
Smith began his 2026 season by winning first place in the high jump, clearing a height of 2.14 meters (7’0.25″). He is a returning NCAA qualifier and reigning SWAC indoor champion. His mark currently ranks him twelfth nationally and ninth in the East Region, putting him in position for early regional qualification.
Fowler, a freshman, placed fourth with a clearance of 2.05 meters (6’8.75″). His performance ranks thirtieth nationally and twentieth in the East Region overall; among freshmen, he is sixth nationally and fourth regionally while standing second in the SWAC behind Smith. This is Fowler’s second time receiving Newcomer of the Week after earning it during his collegiate debut.
These accomplishments reflect Southern University’s ongoing success in track and field events as its athletes continue to compete at high levels within their conference.
