Louisiana State University is expanding its traditional Earth Day observance into a full week of activities, according to an April 17 announcement. The university’s Earth Week programming aims to engage students in hands-on sustainability efforts that reflect Louisiana’s environment and culture.
The move from a single day to a week-long series of events is intended to deepen environmental awareness among the LSU community. Lisa Mahoney, Assistant Director of Campus Sustainability, said, “Sustainability is too important to be recognized as a single event. By promoting activities across an entire week, LSU creates multiple opportunities for students to engage. Each event is designed not just to raise awareness, but to reflect Louisiana’s environment and culture. Whether it’s through art, wellness, volunteering, or education, Earth Week allows students to connect with sustainability in ways that feel personal.” Mahoney also noted that these experiences are meant “to build long-term habits” beyond college.
Earth Week at LSU includes a range of activities such as no-sew T-shirt workshops promoting reuse; goat yoga sessions on the Parade Grounds; Spring Greening Day where volunteers plant native greenery at Himes Hall; environmental trivia and research opportunities; Arbor Day tree planting in the Art Quad; and campus-wide litter cleanups tied to Louisiana’s “Love the Boot” initiative. Registration is required for certain events.
Mahoney emphasized the importance of hands-on involvement: “When students physically participate in activities like planting greenery, sorting recyclables, or cleaning litter, they can really understand the scale and impact of the environmental issues in our community.” She explained that initiatives like Spring Greening Day allow participants “to leave a visible legacy on campus,” with nearly 5,000 native plants being added this year alone.
Collaboration plays a key role in these efforts by bringing together student organizations, academic departments, community partners such as Girl Scouts and Southern University volunteers. This diversity strengthens sustainability initiatives across disciplines.
LSU’s influence extends beyond campus through programs like Keep Louisiana Beautiful and Game Day Recycling Challenge. These efforts encourage recycling during football games and organize statewide cleanups that promote environmental responsibility throughout Baton Rouge and Louisiana.
Mahoney concluded by saying: “The biggest takeaway is that sustainability becomes more meaningful when it’s a personal experience…Advocating sustainability isn’t something that happens one day a year; it’s built through daily habits and ongoing efforts.”
