LSU won against South Carolina with a score of 7-0 in the series finale on May 3, completing a sweep at Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field.
The victory marked LSU’s fourth consecutive win and improved their overall record to 29-21, with a conference record of 9-15. South Carolina fell to 22-27 overall and is now 7-17 in conference play. The result holds significance as it keeps LSU’s momentum strong heading into their next game against Tulane.
LSU coach Jay Johnson said, “Our players did a great job today, I’m very proud of them. We played three baseball games in the span of about 28 hours, and we needed to win these games. The way they played this weekend makes Tuesday’s game important, and they earned the right to have Tuesday’s game matter, and I’m excited about that.”
Senior right-hander Zac Cowan pitched six shutout innings for LSU, allowing only two hits while striking out seven batters. Johnson said about Cowan: “Zac is a special player, one of my favorite players that I’ve ever coached in my entire career. He’s just a winner; it was an important game today, the team needed him to give everything he had, and he did. He really came through and really simplified the game for us.” Relievers Santiago Garcia and Gavin Guidry completed the shutout by giving up three hits over three innings.
South Carolina starter Alex Valentin took the loss after giving up three runs on four hits across four innings. LSU opened scoring with Omar Serna Jr.’s two-run home run in the third inning—his seventh homer this season—and added runs throughout the fifth through seventh innings from contributions by Cade Arrambide, Tanner Reaves, Jack Ruckert, and capitalizing on errors by South Carolina.
LSU will return to action against Tulane at home on Tuesday evening.
