LSU’s baseball team is ranked 13th in several major national polls, according to a March 9 update. The Tigers hold an overall record of 12-5 following a challenging week that included three losses and one win.
The rankings reflect the team’s recent performance, which saw LSU defeat Sacramento State on Friday but fall short in three other games last week. The Tigers are now preparing for upcoming matchups against Creighton and Vanderbilt.
Junior rightfielder Jake Brown played a key role in LSU’s victory over Sacramento State, tying the school’s single-game home run record with three homers and driving in six runs. Brown currently leads the team with a .408 batting average, eight home runs, and 26 runs batted in this season. Sophomore pitcher Casan Evans also contributed with his first win of the year, pitching five perfect innings before finishing with nine strikeouts over nearly six innings.
Other notable performances came from sophomore centerfielder Derek Curiel, who hit .467 over four games last week, and left-handed pitcher Ethan Plog, who delivered two scoreless relief outings to lower his season earned run average to 1.50. Right-hander William Schmidt pitched effectively on Sunday, allowing only three earned runs while striking out eight batters.
In the latest national rankings released by Baseball America, D1Baseball, Perfect Game, and Coaches’ Polls, LSU is listed at number 13 or number 17 depending on the poll. This marks a drop from their preseason ranking of second or first place across most polls earlier this year.
Looking ahead, LSU will face Creighton at home before traveling to play Vanderbilt in a weekend series as they aim to improve their standing.
