The Southern University Lady Jaguars softball team set a new program record for single-season wins after defeating Prairie View 5-4 on Senior Day at Lady Jaguar Field, according to an April 25 announcement. The win marked the team’s 32nd of the season, surpassing previous records of 31 victories achieved in both 1999 and 2005.
This achievement is significant for the Lady Jaguars program, highlighting progress and consistency over multiple decades. The doubleheader featured two close contests that showcased timely hitting and strong pitching performances.
In the first game, Southern matched its previous win record with a narrow 4-3 victory. Aaliyah Zabala pitched a complete game, allowing seven hits and three runs—only two earned—while striking out four batters. Key offensive contributions came from Asia George, Katiana Maldonado, Abigail Mitchell, Ariel Burton, and Laila Clark as Southern built an early lead and held off a late push by Prairie View.
The second game saw Southern overcome adversity after losing their initial lead. After taking a quick advantage in the first two innings through hits by George, Clark, Mitchell, and Maldonado, Prairie View tied the score in the third inning without recording a hit but capitalizing on walks and fielder’s choices. An error allowed Prairie View to take a brief lead before Southern responded in the fifth inning with run-scoring singles from Izabell Astran and Ava Wallace. Jordynn Jennings provided relief pitching that shut down Prairie View’s offense for the remainder of the contest.
With makeup games remaining on their schedule, Southern has secured at least second seed in their division for upcoming conference tournament play. Their final seeding will depend on results from other teams’ series.
Looking ahead to postseason competition, observers will watch whether this historic regular season translates into further success during tournament play.
