For the 2022-23 school year, out-of-state tuition at Southern University and A&M College did not increase, as revealed by the latest figures, according to the latest disclosure from the National Center for Education Statistics.

Louisiana residents enrolled at the four-year public institution paid $9,848 this year, a $6 rise from the $9,842 charged during the 2021-22 academic year.

Non-resident students faced tuition costs 74.6% higher than those for residents, amounting to $17,198 in 2022-23. This reflects a $6 increase from the $17,192 fee in the previous year.

Approximately 67% of the undergraduate student body at the university are Louisiana residents, while the remaining 33% come from other states.

Financial aid data indicates that 97% of full-time undergraduates who began studies at Southern University and A&M College in 2022-23 received some form of student financial assistance. Among them, 1,409 students were awarded grants or scholarships totaling $10 million, and 1,358 students obtained loans exceeding $8.6 million.

When considering all undergraduates, 4,922 students benefited from grants or scholarships amounting to $37.9 million, while 4,562 students secured $29.8 million in federal student loans.

Undergraduate education costs have seen a significant increase over the past few decades. Data shows a 169% rise in the average total cost, including tuition, fees, room, and board, between 1980 and 2020.

According to a 2023 College Board report, in-state students at public universities paid an average of $11,260, while out-of-state students paid $29,150 in the 2023-24 academic year.

Meanwhile, student loan debt has steadily increased over the last 30 years, reaching $1.75 trillion in 2024, averaging a total of $28,950 per borrower. Federal loans make up 92% of the debt, with over half of students at both public and private four-year colleges graduating with student loans.
