BRAC Announces Support For Ebr Sheriff Millage Renewal

BATON ROUGE, La. (November 28, 2022) – The Baton Rouge Area Chamber (BRAC) today announced its support for the renewal of the parish-wide Law Enforcement District millage for the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s office. The millage, which is on the December 10 ballot, accounts for a substantial portion of the Sheriff’s budget.

The revenue generated from the tax millage represents almost 33 percent of the department’s operating budget. The renewal will allow the Sheriff’s office to sustain its current operations and upgrade equipment, technology, and officer training. Failure to renew the millage will have a significant impact on the everyday operations of the agency.

“The business community has repeatedly listed crime as a deterrent to successfully doing business in the region and has expressed the need for an increased focus on crime-prevention across all sectors,” said Helena Cunningham, chairperson of the BRAC Board of Directors. “Our board recognizes the need for the millage renewal and the potential for an adverse impact on East Baton Rouge Parish if it were not renewed. Renewing the millage would continue to allow the Sheriff’s office to combat and reduce crime in our parish.”

The millage renewal will appear on the December 10 Congressional General Election ballot. Early voting for the election began November 26 and will run through December 3. BRAC encourages voters to review their sample ballots at geauxvote.com.
