Southern University senior Tashina Alase recorded the fastest women’s 100-meter hurdles time in the NCAA this season and the second-fastest mark in the world during the LSU Alumni Gold meet, according to an April 25 announcement.
Alase’s achievement is significant as it marks her return from an injury that kept her out of competition for the final five meets of last season. Her performance underscores both her resilience and current form among collegiate and international athletes.
Alase won her event with a time of 12.71 seconds (+1.8), finishing just four hundredths of a second behind Marione Fourie’s world-leading mark of 12.67 set earlier this year. In addition to her hurdles victory, Alase also ran a time of 23.81 seconds in the 200 meters and contributed to Southern’s fifth-place finish in the women’s 4×100-meter relay with a time of 45.47 seconds.
Other notable results for Southern included Roman Smith’s runner-up finish in the men’s high jump at 2.11 meters (6-11), freshman Taylor Hankton placing fifth in the women’s 400-meter hurdles with a top HBCU mark this year at 58.41 seconds, Koi Wedderburn taking sixth place in men’s long jump at 7.17 meters (23-6), Herman Batiste securing eighth place finishes in both men’s high jump (2.01m) and long jump (7.05m), Sahnya Lathon clearing 1.68 meters (5-6) for sixth place in women’s high jump, Ayanna Hunt finishing ninth with a hammer throw mark of 49.05 meters (160-11), Omari Dupas placing fifth in men’s 100 meters at 10.29 seconds, and Southern’s men’s relay team earning sixth place with a time of 40.55 seconds.
The Jaguars will have one week off before hosting the Southwestern Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships at A.W. Mumford Stadium from May 10 to May 12.
